Hexham Gathering sees hundreds of performers converge on the Tyne Valley to celebrate traditional music, song and dance in a four day folk spectacular.

Hexham Gathering is sponsored by Red Hot Property.

Young performers will take the fore with performances in Hexham town centre, and the Queen’s Hall will be full of music throughout the weekend with performances, sessions, workshops and the Big Gig - headlined by the young Scottish powerhouse RURA.  

Village Hall Tour with Magnetic North East

New for 2017, the Gathering will be visiting venues across the Tyne Valley with a Magnetic North East Village Hall Tour led by award-winning Northumbrian pipes and fiddle player Kathryn Tickell.

Performers will include members of Superfolkus, a top level youth folk ensemble, and some exciting new, younger musicians.

All concerts start at 7.30pm and tickets for the above concerts are £10.00 / £6.00

Hexham Town Centre Takeover

10.00am - 4.00pm
Hexham Town Centre will be full of music, singing and dancing as youth ensembles from across the North East perform at outdoor stages.

The Big Gig: RURA / Folkestra / Superfolkus + Kathryn Tickell

Queen’s Hall Arts Centre 7.00pm
The Big Gig is an exciting showcase of the brightest rising stars in the new generation of folk musicians.

Headlining this year’s Big Gig is one of the most sought after young folk bands of today. Named Live Act of the Year at the 2015 BBC Alba Scots Trad Music Awards, RURA are “one of the most exciting bands on the Scottish folk scene” Songlines.

With two successful albums and a growing national reputation, the regional youth folk group Folkestra has performed at numerous concerts and festivals across the country.

Joined by special guest Kathryn Tickell, youth folk ensemble Superfolkus don’t just breathe new life into the tunes of Northumberland and beyond, they blast them into new and uncharted territory!

Hexham Gathering Ceilidh

The Great Hall, Hexham Abbey 8.00pm
Dance the evening away as we treat you to a ceilidh in the beautiful surroundings of Hexham Abbey’s Great Hall! Caller Ruth Ball will take you through the steps as our young ceilidh bands take the stage. Whether you’re a ceilidh novice or a pro, this relaxed ceilidh is suitable for the whole family.

Mixed Instrument Workshop with RURA

The White Room, Queen’s Hall Arts Centre 10.00am
Join the musicians from RURA as they teach you some of their favourite tunes. Suitable for musicians of any instrument aged 9-18. This workshop will be taught by ear, participants should be comfortable playing at an intermediate level.
Workshop tickets: £5.00 (free to Hexham Gathering performers)

Singing Workshop

Queen’s Hall, Studio 10.00am
This workshop will focus on learning, arranging and harmonising some great traditional songs. Suitable for singers aged 9-18 of all abilities. No experience necessary.

4th Generation and Eryn Rae

Queen’s Hall Art Centre 12.00 noon
A lunchtime concert treating you to the finest young folk performers from across Northumberland and the Scottish Borders.

4th Generation is an exciting and energetic youth folk band, and Queen’s Hall Arts’ resident youth band, meeting under the skilful musical direction of Sophy Ball.

Eryn Rae from the Scottish Borders started learning the fiddle at the young age of 7 from the Shetland fiddler, Catriona Macdonald. Now 16, she was one of four finalists in the 2017 BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards. She will be accompanied on guitar by Scott Turnbull.

Hexham Gathering Final Celebration

Bandstand, Abbey Grounds, 1.00pm
The now traditional closing event fills the Abbey Ground with music as we take over the Bandstand! Dance the afternoon away as our amazing youth ensembles treat us to performances and a ceilidh!
Free event, suitable for all the family.
