Mithras Trio

- Main Information
The last two times they were here, the Mithras Trio went down a storm. Their performances of piano trios by Schubert and Dvořák brought many in the Queen’s Hall audience to their feet. They return now with Rachmaninov’s second Trio Élégiaque, his heartfelt tribute ‘to the memory of a great artist’, Tchaikovsky.
The Mithras Trio have established themselves as one of the most exciting piano trios playing in the UK today. They have won several international chamber music competitions and given concerts across the UK, continental Europe and North America. They were BBC New Generation Artists from 2021 to 2023, playing concerts extensively for BBC Radio 3 over that time.
The Trio have devised a wonderful programme for this Hexham visit. It begins with music by Beethoven and by Mel Bonis, a French composer whose melodic, lyrical music is only now getting the attention it deserves. It finishes with the trio a young Rachmaninov wrote in 1893 to honour the life of his mentor and ally, Tchaikovsky, who had died that same year. This is deep, haunting music and a moving way to bring this concert to a close.
