Partial Solar Eclipse (Sele Park)

As part of a series of events celebrating this summer's Discovering Dark Skies exhibition, join us for a special stargazing activity.

If the skies are clear, you will be able to view a partial eclipse when around 90% of the Sun will be covered by the Moon (weather permitting).

Northumberland National Park Authority will set up its specialist 80mm Lunt solar scope, which will allow you to look at the solar eclipse live, and safely.

The event will be hosted by Duncan Wise from the Northumberland National Park Authority. Please meet him next to the Sele Skate Park (spot his National Park Banner). For those unfamiliar with the skate park make your way to the Sele First School and he will be on the patch of grass which is located in front of the school between the play park and skate park/ramps.

A small number of solar glasses will be provided but there will not be enough for everybody. Please see safety information from the BBC below:

How to view the partial eclipse across England safely:

The government is advising people to either use indirect viewing methods or wear genuine eclipse glasses with specially designed filters that meet international safety standards ISO 12312-2:2015(E).

It is not safe to just view it through sunglasses.

Safe options include:

A pinhole viewer, which can be made at home

Viewing the Sun's image projected through a colander or the gaps between tree leaves

Projecting the Sun's image on to a sheet of paper using a pinhole projector

This is a free drop-in and drop-out event.
